Artificial Intelligence vs. Human Translation: Pros and Cons

“The limits of my language mean the limits of the world.” Ludwig Wittgenstien

Language is the basis of communication. The language of each area represents the culture of the particular area. It is the language that forms a bond between people. If there is no language, then there is no communication.   There is certain wisdom stored in every language and this wisdom can only be transferred if the language is translated to others. There are two main means of translating the language; one is a human translation method and the second is the translation done by Artificial Intelligence.

Students who study in foreign universities often face this language barrier because of their poor English speaking plus writing skills. This is the reason that they take assignment help, dissertation writing service UK-based, and so on from different online platforms. This post will be shedding light on the two main means of language translators (Artificial intelligence & Human translation) plus their pros and cons.

Artificial Intelligence vs. Human translations-Definition:

Artificial intelligence is basically the form of a technology or machines that can perform human-like activities. These machines can perceive synthesize and infer information just like human beings. From online services like Netflix and Facebook to chatbots on our phones and in our homes like Siri and Alexa, we are beginning to interact with artificial intelligence (AI) on a near-daily basis. Some of the basic applications of Artificial Intelligence include;

  • Google search engine.
  • Content recommendations.
  • Automation Language translations.
  • Facial recognition.
  • Self-driving vehicles.
  • Computer games.
  • Spam filters.

In fact; all of the data science research topics that students search for on search engines and the games that people play are all different forms of artificial intelligence. Deep learning models, neural learning models, and machine learnings models are used for the processing of artificial intelligence.

On the other hand; Human translation is the oldest form of translation in which one language is translated into another language by a human being. Humans who know two or more two languages can become human translators. It is one of the oldest and still the most prevalent forms of translation. The most common types of human translations are as follows;

  • Literary translation.
  • Technical translation.
  • Professional translation.
  • Administrative translation.

Artificial Intelligence vs. Human translations- Pros:

AI robots are said to create content in multiple languages with written fluency. Some of the visible advantages of Artificial intelligence or more specifically, automation language translations are as follows:

“Artificial Intelligence is the future and the future is here.”Dave Waters

1. Fast:

AI uses neural machine translation tools to translate a whole sentence or a paragraph at a time instead of a word-to-word translation. This makes the process easy and fast.

2. Free:

The tool that AI uses for translation purposes analyses the pattern of language with the help of specific software. This software does not cost any charges just like the Google search engine bar.

3. Translator of multiple languages:

Neural machine translation tools can analyze the pattern of all languages and can interpret them accordingly. You can translate any language into your specific language to get the main idea or concept of the particular paragraph.

4. Keeps getting updated:

There are high-quality language translators that people can use to update the quality of their language. This update feature can be applied on Netflix, Youtube, and other such platforms.

5. Usage:

Artificial intelligence language translators can be used for simple communication purposes or for general understanding.

6. Cheaper:

Machines don’t cost for their services nor does the software. You can get services from free to negligible amounts as compared to other means of translation.

Similarly; there are many benefits of human means of translation as well, which are as follows;

1. High-quality translation:

The translation that is done by a human being is of high quality because an individual spends time and effort on the completion of each task. Such forms of translation prove to be quite impactful for legal and technical document translations.

2. Accurate/precise:

The grammar, the idioms, the metaphors, the pun, everything is precisely translated by a human translator. A human translator will give the meaning of the metaphor but artificial intelligence will provide the word-to-word translation which will make the concept foggy.

3. Covey author’s tone:

Only a human translation will be able to accurately convey the tone and style of an author because only a human can understand the human tone in the best way possible.

4. Provision of all types of translation:

A human translator provides the following main types of translation;

  • Technical translation.
  • Arabization.
  • Localization.
  • Transcreation.

“Human translators are the shadow heroes of literature.” Paul Auster

Artificial Intelligence vs. Human translations- Cons:

Everything comes with its possible pros and cons. Similar is the case with artificial intelligence translation and human translation. The possible setbacks of artificial translations are as follows;

1. Low-quality translation:

The translation done by AI tool is of low quality and sometimes fails to make a sense of the concept.

2. Inconsistent style:

An AI machine has an inconsistent style and tone which is why it cannot convey the message of the author in a true sense.

3. Unable to comprehend cultural metaphors:

A machine can never understand the metaphors or idioms of a certain language which is why they translate it inaccurately.

The human means of translation also has its share of cones, which are as follows;

1.  Costly:

Human translators translate the content by taking high charges for their services.

2.  Time-taking:

It takes almost as much time to translate content as it was to write the original content.

Language translations have added to our lives in a lot of ways because “without translation, we would be living on provinces bordering in silence”. Both; translation done by AI machines as well as human beings have their own set of pros and cons. It is up to the readers; what they think has an upper hand over the other or both go side by side.
