Gemstones have a wide variety of different types; some people associate certain gemstones with zodiac signs and other attributes. Drawing a gemstone is the best way to envision what your perfect gemstone might look like! This tutorial is for you if you want to do just that.

How to Draw A Gemstone

Step 1

When refined and shaped, gemstones often have a very angular texture. This applies to what we will draw in this guide on how to draw a gemstone. For this reason, you should use a ruler when drawing, as this is helpful with the many straight edges of this gemstone.

Now let’s draw the top half of the stone. This top half has five edges in total, with the two on the sides being the longest of all. The two sides above these edges are slightly smaller, ending in a flat section at the top. Getting the angle of these edges to look just right can be a little tricky. So go slow and carefully refer to our example.

Step 2

The top half of this gem design contained some tricky elements, but this second step of the guide should be much easier to accomplish. For this guide step, we will add two more edges to the gem. This is another step where using a ruler would be convenient!

These two lines you’re drawing now are longer than the ones you’ve drawn so far and extend from the last few edges you drew. They culminate in a sharp point at the bottom of the gemstone, as shown in the reference image.

Step 3

You’ve completed the outline for your design, so in this step of our guide to drawing a gemstone, we will work on some of the inside edges. Gemstones usually have many flat, refined surfaces, and we will begin to depict them.

The top half of this gem design contained some tricky elements, but this second step of the guide should be much easier to accomplish. For this guide step, we will add two more edges to the gem. This is another step where using a ruler would be convenient!

First, draw a slightly diagonal line running down each of the top side edges of the gem. Then draw two more lines down where the previous ones ended to meet at the bottom tip of the gem. Once you’ve drawn these new lines as they appear in our reference image, you can proceed to step four of the guide.

Step 4

Continuing this gem design, we now add more edges to the stone. These borders will be front and center and some of the more complex borders we’ve drawn. This is a step you’ll want to refer to the reference image as you work!

The fringes on the front have two triangular fringes at the top and then a six-sided shape on the front. Two are diagonal, forming a pointed peak at the top. Two shorter lines descend straight down from these, and then two long lines descend to meet at the bottom tip of the gem. Once you’ve drawn these shapes, you’re ready for the final details!

Step 5

Before adding some colors to this guide to drawing a gemstone, we must finish the final little details first. The lines we draw in this step are horizontal and run through the center of the gem.

Draw straight lines across the various vertical edges you drew, and try to guide yourself from the reference image when drawing the angles where they are.

Once you’ve finished those final fringes, you can finish off this image by adding a background or some excellent extra details! How would you like to finish this beautiful gem painting?

Step 6

Different gemstones are known for their distinctive colors, so this last step of this gemstone design lets you show what kind it is. In our reference image, we’ve selected some beautiful shades of purple to show that this gemstone may be an amethyst.

However, that’s just one way to colorize this image! When you are done, you can search for different gems and choose your favorite color for this picture.
